Ergo Proxy is my favorite Japanese cartoon. It's about a frigid woman who lives together with a gay robot in a city where nobody manages to speak more than two sentences without namedropping some concept from Western philosophy or Gnosticism. One day she decides to join a mentally ill man and the malfunctioning robot girl he kidnapped on a journey through a boring wasteland, during which they talk to other mentally ill people in their dreams, take part in a TV game show, steal canned food from a super market, and visit a Disney Land-style theme park.
