In an ideal world we would use XMPP. I used to try to reach this ideal world and even got a bunch of "normal" people to try it. But it was too prone to breakage. Matrix seems to work better, at least for now. There are valid concerns regarding it but I'll cope with it as long as we're leaving WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram and whatnot behind.

How the heck is signal even an option?? It operates on phone numbers! Threema, wire, session, jami do not require phone numbers. XMPP is best.
