Connecting to Tor doesn't automatically make using it illegal, but it certainly means you probably get flagged as suspicious. Stay away from illegal content or trying to buy illegal drugs|services and you will be more OK. If you want to be very cautious, don't use persistent storage and run everything from a RAM drive. This is a good idea, you can't control what other people post on websites and if your computers are searched for whatever reason, they will not care where illegal content came from, but that it exists on the persistent storage.
