I''ve been using Ubuntu for a year now and I''ve been thinking of trying out other Linux distros. I''ve tried Linux Mint and that''s pretty good. But how about Manjaro or Arch? What''s the difference between the two? I''m thinking of installing either one on an old Dell PC.

>>fg-CFG648E8 Okay, I''ll try out Arch Linux. I was wondering what kind of cool features Arch has over others.

I've been running Haiku on my laptop for the past month or so and I'm really hyped about it. Personal operating systems are the way to go. Fucking around with users and permissions is such a chore when all my systems are single user. There are only two types of files: my files and system files. >>fb-7621185E → I would not reccomend it as a first distro but it's really not so hard. Just read the wiki for use flags and kernel configs and you'll be fine. It's just a lot of reading and waiting, the autism is pretty minimal.

>>fg-AZY96QKG damn based haiku chad. i hear its extremely comfy, but very insecure. do you daily drive it or plan to?
>>
Anonymous 05/25/21(Tue)22:29:27 No. fg-EK3V3CCE >>fg-NQ95KFIK
>>fg-OQN5TWZP I use it when I can but the proliferation of the web and the lack of a chromium/firefox port means it can't be your only OS. It's got Qt5, python3, quite a bit of software ported to it though. It's almost there, just cucked by web 5.0 or whatever we're supposed to be on now. Also the drivers suck, wifi is slow as shit, thermals are terrible, and I get ghost images from the god-awful video drivers. I love it though.

>>

>>fg-NQ95KFIK The DE is probably the least exciting part of Haiku, I could care less about that. Slapping a Haiku face on the Linux kernel wouldn't really achieve anything.

>>fg-A3PXX0BJ huh, i thought it'd be a big part of it, plus the windows system and all. does it have any cool kernel features?
>>
Anonymous 05/26/21(Wed)19:49:01 No. fg-OBCE6233 >>fg-6XMAQBL2
>>fg-2UBICSGC I'm not much of a kernel hacker, but what I like about it are things like the filesystem structure and the responsiveness of it. It's actually hard to believe how snappy it is until you try it yourself, the UI is more responsive on that machine than on more powerful hardware running the same programs under linux. Even terminal emulators are noticeably more responsive. I don't know how it works because it's the same code running on both machines, something about how process priories are handled I'm guessing.
